When it comes to final assembly, it is all a question of timing. Obviously all the necessary parts must arrive at the right time - too few or too many parts will hold up production. This is where the flexibility of the AS-Iinterface system can help.
At Opel's No. 1 works in Bochum, Germany, the assembly line carries only the required number of components - a single parts bin is sufficient. Lean material handling becomes possible - just-in-time thanks to AS-Interface.
Since the installation of the AS-Interface system, components have been arriving in the right place at the right time. The System comprises an AS-Interface master with 2 ´ 80 metres of flat cable: A button is pressed on the line and a signal light displays the order on the board in the stores. Replies, queries and acknowledgements - all the necessary information is communicated via AS-Interface. Fast and precise, at the press of a button. All areas are kept up-to-date at all times.
Siemens AS-Interface has allowed Opel to implement a highly effective internal material flow model. Lean production at full speed.
